Jetstar Japan has announced it will commence direct flights from three major Japanese cities – Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya – to Taipei before the end of the year.

The low fares airline will initially operate three services a week on each route, quickly increasing to daily by the end of December, with its fleet of Airbus A320 aircraft.

Jetstar Japan will become the first LCC to operate flights between Nagoya and Taiwan.

Jetstar Japan Chief Executive Officer Gerry Turner said the low cost carrier expected these new services to be popular with leisure travellers.

“Until this year, Jetstar Japan was focussed on being the domestic low cost carrier of choice in Japan, bringing low fares to 11 cities across the country with over 100 flights per day,” Mr Turner said.

“With low cost carriers only representing less than 10 per cent of all international flights to and from Japan we are expanding our focus to bringing our everyday low fares to customers on international routes.

“These three new routes from Japan to Taiwan follow the success of our flights from Tokyo and Osaka to Hong Kong which we started earlier this year and have exceeded our expectations.

“Taiwan is a very popular destination for Japanese travellers and Taiwan is the third largest inbound tourism market for Japan. We expect these services to grow the market.”

Flights will commence from Tokyo’s Narita Airport to Taoyuan International Airport in Taipei on 27 November. Flights from Osaka and Nagoya to Taipei will commence in mid-December.
